Willie Winona Bennett Prater, age 89, of Douglasville, passed away on Sunday, February 18, 2024, surrounded by her family. She was born on February 25, 1934 in Ravenscroft, Tennessee, the daughter of the late William Ruben Bennett and the late Roxie Leonard Bennett.

In her early years, she was recognized as a local hero at Shawen Acres Children’s Home for saving a young boy’s life from drowning. She was a devout Christian who loved the Lord with all of her heart and was passionate about spreading and singing the gospel to her family, friends and anyone else who was willing to listen. She met the love of her life serving her country in the US Army. She was a dedicated wife to her husband, loving mother to her children and nurturing Mema to her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was a phenomenal homemaker. Her generosity and compassion for others knew no bounds. So much so, she gave the jacket off her own back to someone in need. She had a deep appreciation for God’s creation of the outdoors. She found beauty in the trees, leaves and often spoke of how the wind reminded her of the Holy Spirit in that you couldn’t see it but you could always feel it. She lived and loved deeply, impacting countless lives of others. She will forever live in our hearts until we meet again.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband CSM Rufus Eugene Prater, Sr. and her son Rufus E. Prater, Jr.

She is survived by her children, Willie Jean Brumbelow of Rockmart, GA, Patricia Ann and Mike Renova of Douglasville, GA, Linda Sue and Ignacio Tapia of Villa Rica, GA, John Wess Prater of Carrollton, Ga, Wanda Jane and Franky Williams of Villa Rica, Hope Marie Prater of Douglasville, Ga,; sixteen grandchildren and twenty-six great-grandchildren.

The family will have a private graveside service at Powell Chapel Cemetery on Friday, February 23, 2024 with military honors rendered by the United States Army.
